Canada's parliamentary committee wants prosecution of extremists dangerous for India

Ottawa, Dec 8 (IBNS): A high-level Canadian parliamentary committee wants its country to probe into and prosecute extremists who are posing threats to India's security, media reports said.

The committee has said Canada must take the steps against the extremists who are working within the country's borders.

The committee made the report while looking into the allegations related to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's visit to India in February 2018.

Convicted pro-Khalistani terrorist Jaspal Atwal was photographed with Trudeau's wife Sophie during the India trip.

According to media reports, Atwal has been charged for allegedly uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in connection with an incident which occurred on April 23.

Atwal was convicted in Canada for attempting the murder of then-Punjab minister Malkiat Singh Sidhu on Vancouver Island in 1986.

Atwal's invitation to the dinner hosted by the Canadian High Commissioner in India came as an embarrassment for Trudeau as he had ensured Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh of Canada's distance from all those who are allegedly involved with the Sikh separatist movement.

As a damage control, the invitation to Atwal was later rescinded.
