China 'not worried' by international pressure over Canadian's death sentence

Beijing, Jan 16 (IBNS): China has stated it is not worried by the international pressure over the death sentence meted out to a Canadian for smuggling, media reports said.

Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, who was tried in 2016, was earlier imprisoned for 15 years.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying has been quoted by CBC News, "I can very clearly state that we are not worried in the slightest."

The United Nations said it opposes death sentence excepting special circumstances.

Australia's acting Foreign Affairs Minister, Simon Birmingham, has expressed his deep concern over the case.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused China of arbitrarily imposing death sentence on Schellenberg.

In reply, China accused Trudeau and warned him for making such irresponsible comments.

In late December, a Chinese court had ordered a fresh trial for a Canadian.
