Donald Trump impeached, to face Senate trial now

Washington/IBNS: The House of Representatives on Wednesday impeached Donald Trump, making him only the third US President against whom such a move has been made.

The move by the House of Representatives has now set up a trial in the Senate that will decide whether he remains in office.

The House voted on two charges - that the president abused his power and that he had obstructed Congress, reported BBC.

Meanwhile, the White House tweeted: "The President is confident the Senate will restore regular order, fairness, and due process, and will continue to work tirelessly to address the needs and priorities of the American people, as he has since the day he took office."

Addressing a rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, Trump was quoted as saying by BBC: "While we're creating jobs and fighting for Michigan, the radical left in Congress is consumed with envy and hatred and rage, you see what's going on."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the event as a "great day for the Constitution” but “a sad day for America.”

“I could not be prouder or more inspired by the moral courage of the House Democrats. We never asked one of them how they were going to vote. We never whipped this vote” she was quoted as saying by CNN.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he will speak on the impeachment.

"At 9:30am tomorrow morning, on the Senate floor, I will speak about House Democrats’ precedent-breaking impeachment of the President of the United States," he tweeted.

Reacting to the move, US presidential candidate Joe Biden tweeted, "President Trump abused his power, violated his oath of office, and betrayed our nation. This is a solemn moment for our country. But in the United States of America, no one is above the law not even the President."

Before Trump, only Presidents- Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton- have faced similar fates in the past.
