Dump Trump: Scotland protests US President's visit to the country
Edinburgh, July 14 (IBNS): US President Donald Trump faced massive protests upon his arrival in Scotland, where he will be spending the weekend, reports said.
Trump reached the Prestwick Airport shortly after 8:20 pm on Friday, following his 2-day UK visit.
Thousands gathered at George Square in Glasgow ahead of his arrival, holding up posters which read, "On Yer Bike Trump", "Dump Trump" among others.
The US President, whose mother was Scottish, described his tour as a private visit. He and US First Lady Melania will be staying at Trump's Turnberry golf resort in Ayrshire.
Leading the protests are The Scotland United Against Trump group, which told the BBC that it plans to attract 3000 volunteers, who will take the streets. They said that it was a message against Trump's "politics of division and hatred".
This is the US President's first visit to the nation, since assuming office.
However, contrary to the general mood, Scottish Secretary David Mundell said that Trump's visit will bolster the bilateral ties.
"The UK and the USA have a long and important relationship - we have close cultural ties, a strong economic partnership and the US is one of our most important security allies.
"The President's visit is an opportunity to strengthen those vital links. Mr Trump is passionate about his Scottish heritage, and I hope he enjoys his visit to Scotland," he said.
Unhappy with his visit, protesters are also expected to demonstrate in front of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on Saturday.
The protest will feature a giant Trump baby blimp, similar to the one which was seen in London, during the US President's visit on Friday.
Trump, however, will not be meeting First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, a sharp critic of the US President.
