Ex-Canadian soldier returns to Kabul for lighting Invictus flame
MCpl. Jody Mitic was on his third visit to Kabul being the member of the Canadian forces when he stepped into a landmine to lose his feet.
Mitic, who is a 20-year veteran, is presently a city councilor in Ottawa.
He returned to Kabul to light the flame of the Invictus game. He lit the flame on Wednesday inside the stately Presidential Palace.
Speaking about the emotional moment, Mitic was quoted by the Star: "It makes sense that the Invictus Spirit Flame would be lit in Kabul. After all, this is where the lives of so many Canadian soldiers changed dramatically."
Invictus flame has started its journey from Kabul and will reach Toronto via Germany.
The flame will reach next at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre in Germany.
The ceremony was inaugurated by Afganistan President Ashraf Ghani and NATO Resolute Support Mission Commander Gen. John Nicholson.
Gen. John Nicholson was quoted by the Star as saying: "Invictus is the Latin word for ‘unconquered.’ I cannot think of a better way to describe the brave Afghans who continue to fight for their country."
The flame after being received in Toronto will be carried into the opening ceremony of the Invictus game in the city on September 23.
