Hunt on for missing radioactive device in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, Aug 21 (IBNS): A search for a missing radioactive device in Malaysia has been initiated, reports said on Tuesday.
The said device went missing from a pickup truck earlier this month, a BBC report said.
Sounding alert, authorities have warned that it could harm people if handled inefficiently.
Officials have said that another worry is if the device falls into the wrong hands- it could be used to make bombs.
The 23-kilogram device contains the radioactive isotope iridium-192, which according to the International Atomic Energy Agency can cause permanent injury if handled for minutes to hours, and could be fatal if in close proximity for hours or days.
Earlier this month, police had detained two men for questioning, but have since been released.
Urging calm, Deputy Home Minister Azis Jamman has said that things are in control.
