Indonesia earthquake leaves 14 killed

Bali, July 29 (IBNS): An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale hit   Indonesia's popular tourist island of Lombok and left at least 14 people killed, media reports said.

The epicentre of the quake was located at latitude  8.274 degrees south and longitude 116.491 degrees east.

As per the US  Geological Survey website, the epicentre of the quake was located at 50km (31 miles) north-east of the city of Mataram, in northern Lombok.

The quake hit the place just before 07:00 local time (00:00 GMT) on Sunday. 

The incident left one  Malaysian tourist killed He was reportedly on a hiking trip to Mount Rinjani.

The incident left 160 people injured.

The head of Mataram Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Muhammad Rum, was quoted as saying by The Jakarta Post that his office had erected several emergency tents including a medical tent in front of Sembalun Puskesmas.

"The quake felt so strong... tourists were panicked and frightened and escaped from hotels," Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, a citizen protection director at the foreign ministry, told BBC Indonesian.

UK tourists Katherine and Alexis Bouvier, who are on honeymoon in Lombok, told the BBC: "We were woken by the earthquake at approximately 06:45 - it was pretty terrifying."

Rescue operations commenced immediately after the quake hit the area.
