Justin Trudeau to speak at UN assembly

Toronto, Sept 20 (IBNS): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined the world leaders for the annual gathering at the United Nations general assembly.

On Monday, at the inaugural summit on refugees and migrants, the group recommended a declaration to provide a more coordinated and humane response to the world’s 65.3 million displaced people.

Trudeau urged all countries to help in the best possible way to solve the ongoing crisis fuelled by Syria’s civil war.

Around 31,000 Syrian refugees have landed to Canada since last year.

Trudeau says, “While that is a great story, I don’t want to lose sight of the fact that Canada’s engagement must not stop at resettlement.”

He further adds, “Now is the time for each of us to consider what more we can contribute. So, in Canada, we’re looking at our options.”

Trudeau points out that Canada would also spend an additional $64.5 million over the coming years to support the people affected by humanitarian crises around the world.

He is scheduled to address the general assembly on Tuesday, whereas Barack Obama will deliver his last US presidential speech at the session, before he steps down this new year.
