Landmine explosion kills 5 children in eastern Syria

Damascus/Xinhua/UNI: At least five children were killed on Sunday when a landmine exploded inside a school in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, a war monitor reported.

The landmine exploded inside the Ibn Sina school in the village of Taybeh on the outskirts of Mayadeen city in the countryside of Deir al-Zour, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The death toll could rise given the critically wounded children, the Britain-based watchdog added.

It is the latest incident in Mayadeen where people are killed by the war's leftovers, as the city was under the control of the Islamic State (IS) militant group before the government retook its control last year.

A total of 213, including 27 children, were killed by landmine explosions in Syria in 2019, according to the Observatory.
