In a move reflecting Washington’s renewed focus on Asia, US President Donald Trump has appointed Dr. Anjani Sinha, a Bihar-born medical and business professional of Indian origin, as the new American Ambassador to Singapore.

Dr. Sinha arrived in Singapore on Thursday to assume his diplomatic responsibilities.

His appointment underscores the United States’ commitment to enhancing cooperation with Singapore in key sectors such as technology, defence, energy, and trade.

According to the US Embassy in Singapore, Sinha’s appointment reaffirms America’s long-standing strategic partnership with the island nation.

“For nearly six decades, US–Singapore cooperation has advanced shared goals in innovation, energy security, and defence. Ambassador Sinha will play a key role in strengthening these bonds and promoting prosperity across the region,” the embassy stated.

From Bihar to the global stage

Born in Bihar, Dr. Sinha earned his medical degree from Mahatma Gandhi Medical College before working at Safdarjung Hospital and the Central Institute of Orthopaedics in New Delhi.

He moved to the United States in 1979, completing internships at Mount Sinai Medical Centre and Long Island Jewish Medical Centre.

Later, he specialised in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine, becoming a respected name in the field.

Over his decades-long career, Dr. Sinha served as a senior orthopaedic consultant across major centres along the US East Coast and Florida.

Beyond medicine, he also ventured into healthcare business leadership, earning recognition for his innovation and management expertise.

He is married to Dr. Kuntala “Kiki” Sinha, a retired anaesthesiologist and former faculty member at New York University.

Analysts say Sinha’s appointment not only marks a personal milestone for the Bihar-born diplomat but also underscores the increasing global footprint of the Indian diaspora in shaping America’s diplomatic and strategic outreach.
