Wellington, Jun 21 (IBNS): New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to a baby girl on Thursday.

The news was shared by the Prime Minister herself, who took to Instagram to share a picture of her with the new born.

"Welcome to our village wee one. Feeling very lucky to have a healthy baby girl that arrived at 4.45pm weighing 3.31kg (7.3lb) Thank you so much for your best wishes and your kindness. We're all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital," Ardern captioned the image.

By virtue of her child birth, Ardern became the second woman, after Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto, in history, to do so while in office.

Ardern, 37, has presently passed her duties to deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, while she takes a six-week maternity leave.

Elected in October last year, Ardern made her pregnancy public in January, earlier this year.

Apart from being the first Woman Prime Minister of New Zealand, she is also the youngest to hold that chair in the last 100 years.
