Pakistan pledges USD 3 million to SAARC Covid-19 Emergency Fund with condition
Islamabad/IBNS: Pakistan on Thursday said it will contribute USD 3 million to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation’s (SAARC) Covid-19 Emergency Fund that was formed last month during a meeting of leaders of the member states to fight the menace.
The establishment of the fund was proposed by Indian PM Narendra Modi.
Pakistan said it will contribute to the fund on the condition that the facility is administered by the Saarc secretariat.
“While communicating Pakistan’s decision to the Saarc Secretariat, it has been conveyed that all proceeds of the Fund should be administered by the Saarc Secretariat and that the modalities for the Fund’s utilisation should be finalised through consultations with the Member States as per the Saarc Charter,” read the statement issued by the Pakistan Foreign Ministry.

“Pakistan’s perspective in this regard was also conveyed during a telephone conversation between Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood and Secretary General SAARC Esala Ruwan Weerakoon, today,” read the statement.
The meeting between the leaders was held on Mar 15 via video conference.
COVID 19, which is believed to have first started from China's Wuhan region, has now touched many parts of the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who led the video conference of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) leaders to discuss measures to combat Coronavirus outbreak, on Mar 15 and had proposed to establish a COVID-19 Emergency Fund.
Modi announced that India will contribute 10 million US dollars to the fund.
