Riots hit Sweden: 10 arrested
Stockholm/UNI: Riots broke out in the Sweden city of Malmo, following burning of some objectionable material by the members of a far-right Danish party, police said on Saturday.
According to reports by the local media, rioters indulged in arson and threw objects at police officers and rescue service personnel on Friday night. Minor injuries were reported among police personnel and 10 individuals have been arrested so far in connection with riots.
The violence started after far-right activists of Danish party Stram Kurs (Hard Line) allegedly burnt some objectionable material on Friday afternoon near a neighborhood which is mostly occupied by migrants. The act of burning was reportedly filmed and posted online as well, reported the local TT news agency.
Earlier in the day, the party’s leader Rasmus Paludan was denied permission to hold a meeting in Malmo.
Paludan was invited by outspoken Swedish artist Dan Park, who has previously been convicted on charges of inciting hatred between ethnic groups.
Paludan in the past has been convicted on charges of racism and for posting videos derogatory to a particular religion on his party’s social media channels, after he was sentenced to three months in jail and was disbarred from practicing law.
