Sheikh Hasina ouster: Ex-Bangladesh Textile Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi arrested in Dhaka

Former Bangladeshi Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, who was part of the ousted Awami League government, has been arrested in Dhaka, media reports said on Sunday.

Police arrested him from a house in Pirergoli area around 3:00am, Mollah Mohammad Khalid Hussain, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station, told The Daily Star.

The former minister has been kept at DB office following his arrest.

Golam Dastagir is accused in a case filed in Narayanganj, the OC added.

Bangladesh witnessed massive protests over the job quota row and soon it spiralled to become a movement against former PM Sheikh Hasina and her government which eventually led to her ouster.

Meanwhile, another Awami League leader  Abdus Sobhan Golap, who was the party's  Publicity and Publication Secretary, was detained from Nakhalpara region in Dhaka.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) announced that he was detained just before 3pm on Sunday, reported Dhaka Tribune.

Murder case filed against Sheikh Hasina

A murder case has been filed against Hasina, who is currently in India, and 12 others over the death of  Sub-Assistant Director and Freedom Fighter Md Abdur Rahim.

Rahim is an accused in the 2009 Pilkhana massacre case.

Advocate Abdul Aziz, son of the deceased Abdur Rahim, filed an application to register a case in court on Sunday, reported Dhaka Tribune.

Bangladesh's interim government, headed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, revoked the diplomatic passport of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday after she fled to India following massive student protests earlier this month, media reports said.

The move to cancel Sheikh Hasina's documents leaves the former Bangladeshi leader in potential limbo.

The decision came on the same day a United Nations team arrived in Dhaka to assess whether to investigate alleged human rights violations.

More than 450 people were killed, many of whom died in police fire, during the weeks leading up to Sheikh Hasina's ouster, with crowds storming her official residence in Dhaka and ending her 15-year regime.
