Spike in E. coli cases results in Canada-wide recall of Robin Hood flour

Toronto, Apr 6 (IBNS): Recent increase in cases diagnosed with E. coli O121 in Canada resulted in extending the original recall of 10-kilogram bags Robin Hood brand flour by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to (CFIA) to the entire Canada, media reports said.

Last month CFIA had issued a recall of the 10-kilogram bags Robin Hood brand flour only to B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, CBCNews reports said.

But recently 26 cases diagnosed with E. coli O121 linked with consumption of the Robin Hood Flour had alarmed the CFIA and its officials issued a Canada wide recall or the 10-kilogram bags Robin Hood brand flour.

The recalled product's UPC is 0 59000 01652 8.

It was also revealed that most of the patients diagnosed with E. coli were men with an average age of 24 and had been consuming Robin Hood flour.

The CFIA said that it was verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.

The date range of the illness is from November 2016 to late February.

Symptoms of E. coli poisoning include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea.

CFIA said that although most symptoms clear up within five to ten and patients recover completely, others infected with E.coli develop life-threatening symptoms, including kidney failure, seizures and stroke, and death in rare cases.
