Stockholm, Sept 25 (IBNS): In a major development in the politics of Sweden, country's PM  Stefan Lofven will need to step down after he was defeated in the parliamentary no-confidence vote brought against him by the opposition on Tuesday.

The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD) backed the vote which removed the PM from his position.

The voting took place just weeks after the general election was held in the nation. The election produced a hung parliament.

In Tuesday's dramatic vote, 204 MPs voted against Lofven while 142 voted in favour, reported BBC.

A new leader will now be proposed by the Speaker.

According to reports, Lofven might continue to serve as the as caretaker prime minister until the process of choosing the new leader is decided.
