Tarique Rahman, who led BNP to victory in the general polls held last week after months of political uncertainty since ex-PM Sheikh Hasina's exit from Bangladesh amid widespread violence on August 5, 2024, took oath as the PM on Tuesday.

The ceremony was held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament when President Muhammed Sahabuddin administered the oath process.

Apart from Rahman, who is the son of late former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia,  25 ministers and 24 state ministers also took oath.

Their portfolios are expected to be shared later in the day.

All 212 MPs of the BNP alliance, 76 MPs of Jamaat-led alliance and seven independent MPs took oath at the oath room of the Jatiya Sangsad, reported The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, Indian Speaker Om Birla attended the event in Dhaka.

He wrote on X, "Honoured to be in Dhaka representing India at the swearing‑in ceremony of the new government led by H.E.  Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister. It’s an important moment that will strengthen people‑to‑people ties and shared democratic values between our two nations."

According to results announced by the Election Commission, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Rahman, secured 209 seats in the 297-member parliament. With support from its allies, the BNP’s tally rose to 212 seats.

Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies won 77 seats in the election — the first general polls held in Bangladesh since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
