Ankara, July 21 (IBNS): Following a failed coup in the country, Turkey's President has declared a state of emergency for three months in the nation.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying by Anadolu Agency: "The purpose of the state of emergency is to most effectively and swiftly take steps necessary to eliminate the threat to democracy in our country, the rule of law, and the rights and freedom of our citizens."

He made the announcement from his presidential complex after back-to-back National Security Council and Cabinet meetings, reports said.

The President said the emergency was declared under Article 120 of the Turkish Constitution.
