US urges India to 'protect and respect right of peaceful assembly'
Washington/IBNS: In view of the attack on protesting students of Jamia Millia University and later Aligarh Muslim University, the United States has urged India 'to protect and respect the right of peaceful assembly'.
The US State Department has urged the protesters to refrain from resorting to violence and authorities to "protect and respect right of peaceful assembly".
"We are closely following developments regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act. We urge authorities to protect and respect the right of peaceful assembly. We also urge protestors to refrain from violence," a US State Department spokesperson has been quoted by NDTV.
The US has also urged India to protect the rights of religious minorities as New Delhi has recently passed the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which will grant Indian citizenship to all Hindu, Sikh, Christians, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain but not Muslim refugees who came to the country before 2015.

Following the clash, police had entered the university campus without permission and assaulted the students leading to an outrage across the country.
Aligarh Muslim University students were assaulted by police when they were protesting against the Jamia violence.
Over last few days, several states of India are on boil with various political parties protesting against the Act. Not just that, the protests had turned violent in north-east and West Bengal when the agitators set buses, trains on fire.
