White House clinches deal with Mexico, imposition of tariffs by US suspended

"I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico," Trump wrote on Twitter.

"The Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the US on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended. Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States. Details of the agreement will be released shortly by the State Department," Trump added.

Last week, Trump threatened to impose a 5 per cent tariff on all imported Mexican goods beginning Jun 10 to pressure the country to stop the flow of undocumented migrants crossing the border, and to gradually increase tariffs until the problem is remedied, drawing extensive criticism both at home and abroad.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard also confirmed that the US would not impose trade tariffs over migration on the Latin American country.

"US will not introduce tariffs on Monday. Thank you to everyone who has supported us, meaning the greatness of Mexico," Ebrard tweeted.

According to a US-Mexico joint declaration, Mexico agreed to take more migrants seeking asylum in the United States while they await adjudication of their cases.

The country also agreed to increase enforcement to contain the flow of migrants headed to the US, including by deploying national guard troops to its southern border and cracking down on human smuggling organizations, the declaration said.
