Actor Tnusree Chakraborty supports awareness drive about languishing silk weaves of eastern India
Kolkata/IBNS: Bengali actor and model Tnusree Chakraborty was the headliner for Kolkata-based women’s fashion brand Ummaira’s recent exhibition titled ‘Silks of the East’.
The exhibition focused on the heritage silk weaves from eastern India which enjoyed a huge popularity once upon a time but now are mostly languishing for want of patronisation.
Said Chakraborty, who also supported the cause, “Through the “Silks of the East” collection, Ummaira is not just preserving the age-old traditions but also retelling the stories of Karigari. In fact, I love wearing silk sarees, and I believe every woman should have at least one silk saree in their wardrobe."
Owner of the clothing brand, Debaroopa Bhattacharya, wanted to make buyers aware of the richness and exclusivity of eastern silk and thereby help the craftspeople to find a wider market for their merchandise.
The initiative was praised by Pauline Laravoire, co-founder and CEO of Y-East - a home grown platform dedicated to social and environmental impact; Sanjina Gupta, founder of Rangeen Khidki, an organisation working for sexual and reproductive health and rights (the organisation was the recipient of part of the sale proceeds too); Meghdut RoyChowdhury, Executive Director & Chief Innovation Officer of Techno India Group and founder of OFFBEAT CCU; and others.
