Amid parties, revellers bid adieu to 2014
People will bid farewell to a year which saw India get its 15th Prime Minister in Narendra Modi while the cricket fraternity were shocked to see Indian cricketer MS Dhoni announcing his retirement from Tests, ending an era which saw the country achieve several laurels under his leadership.
At the same time, the world witnessed the deadly face of a disease in the form of Ebola which challenged humanity in Africa and panicked people across the globe.

In India, the New Year's eve is equally special and revellers engross in partying to usher in the new year.

From the snow-blanketed Kashmir to sunset boulevards of Kolkata, it is party time as the crammed out at all public places since morning.
Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has greeted the nation on the eve of New Year 2015.
In a message the President has said, “I extend warm greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens for a happy and prosperous New Year. Let 2015 be a year of peace, progress and harmony."
"Let us abhor violence and maintain maximum vigilance against all efforts, from within or without, to disturb peace and security. Let us celebrate pluralism and promote tolerance and understanding amongst all communities. Let the New Year be dedicated to the creation of an inclusive society where goodwill and brotherhood prevails amongst our people," he said.
"A number of new beginnings have been made and important initiatives launched in 2014. We must take these initiatives to fruition. Development must reach the poor and under privileged across the length and breadth of our country. Governance, at all levels, must become efficient, transparent, accountable and citizen friendly. We must also ensure the protection of our women and greater gender sensitivity. Let us work with heart and soul and without distraction, to take our nation to new heights of achievement," said he.
Vice President of India M. Hamid Ansari has extended his warm greetings and best wishes to all the citizens on the advent of the New Year 2015.
In his message, he has said that may the New Year be the harbinger of happiness, good health and prosperity for all.
In Kolkata, there will be multiple parties and events all across the city, specially planned for the night to mark the occasion.
Like every year, the iconic Park Street in the heart of the city remains the most happening destination with people belonging to all ages visiting the beautifully decorated corners.
Discotheques and pubs are the most crowded spots for the party animals in the city.
Restaurants and food chains witness long queues outside as they prepare several special delicacies to bank on the festive spirit.
As the almanac will change in every household on Thursday, people will pin new hopes and aspirations leaving behind the last year.
