He checked his work email on vacation—What he discovered left him shocked

A 31-year-old Reddit user has claimed he discovered he had been laid off while on vacation after an automated reply to an email unexpectedly revealed that he was no longer employed.

Sharing his experience on Reddit, the user wrote: "I am 31 and am pretty sure I just found out I was laid off."

He explained that while on vacation, he remembered something related to a work project and emailed himself from his personal account so he would have a reminder waiting when he returned to the office.

However, instead of a routine delivery, he received an automated response indicating that his employment had ended.

"Only after looking at the automated response did I see that it had been edited without my knowledge to state that 'this individual is no longer employed at X Company' and to contact my manager," he wrote.

The Redditor added that earlier in the week, his manager had texted him asking if he could join a last-minute work call.

"It wasn't too outside of the norm. It's a small company and we communicate via text fairly consistently, even during vacations. I told him I wasn't able to due to the time difference and lack of consistent Wi-Fi, so he told me to just keep enjoying my time off," he said.

The unexpected discovery left him stunned, especially because he had recently received a promotion.

"Honestly, this all comes as a shock to me because I was just promoted back in January and, based on all accounts from my peers and the executive leadership, I have been doing well. I even had a great lunch with my boss last week and there were no signs," he wrote.

The user said he was scheduled to return to work after his vacation but was now uncertain about what to do next.

"I am supposed to go back to the office and return from my vacation on Tuesday next week and am honestly shocked and confused. Not sure what I should be doing since I am still on vacation," he added.

Reddit users offer support

The post quickly drew reactions from fellow Reddit users, many of whom shared words of encouragement and advice.

One user wrote: "This happened to me once. Please don't let this ruin your vacation. If anything, use this to clear your head so you'll be ready to plan your next move from a good place."

Another commented: "It would be impossible for me to enjoy the rest of my vacation with this news."

A third user added: "This is the way! Happened to me in May."
