Organic fashion is now trending in Kolkata: Shreya Jalan Mehta
From a Chemistry student to the world of fashion, Shreya Jalan Mehta took a huge step to become a prominent designer in Kolkata. As IBNS correspondent Souvik Ghosh catches up with her in a hot summer afternoon, Shreya speaks about the latest trends
As far as I know you were a Chemistry student. Tell us about your journey from science to creativity.
Since child, I was a creative person. I had those instincts where my creativity used to flow. I was already interested in making new things from the existing ones so I had that in me. Again Chemistry was also one of my loves. So after doing graduation in Chemistry, I gave a test in a college for fashion without preparation but I got through. I had to choose one and I went for fashion.
What kind of transformation you have witnessed in fashion since the time you began your career?
I feel fashion changes every year tremendously and all the designers have certain styles which they picked. Again fashion means to be comfortable and confident in what we are wearing. I feel people are realising that instead of simply following the celebrities. Fashion is something in which one has a belief.
What type of dresses you would suggest people to wear in this summer season?
In this season, I think cotton blends are the best. They are very good. That dress is good which has a relaxed cut and not very fitted.
What are the challenges to meet the demands of customers?
It is difficult to meet the demands. If I work as an artist then I can do wonders but it is tough to blend my creativity with the demands of people. This is very difficult for me at least to manage both my creativity and the demands.
What is trendy right now in Kolkata in terms of fashion?
I definitely feel organic fashion is trendy. It is the talk of the hours. Handwoven things like Khadi are in the rage. People are adopting natural things much more so I think even in Calcutta (Kolkata), where there is a hot and humid weather, it is best to go for cottons and linens.
