The University of Mumbai which was previously known as the University of Bombay, was established in 1857 and on broadly the same lines as the University of London. One of the oldest learning institutions of India it has produced notable alumni such as Homi Bhabha and B R Ambedkar.

The original campus was at Fort George at south Mumbai. Located in 13 acres, the old facility is still functional and houses 22,000 sq ft of classrooms and 84,000 sq ft of laboratory space beside the administrative wing.

The Kalina campus of Mumbai University sprawls across 230 acres and is home to Jawaharlal Nehru Library, National Centre for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology and a biophysics lab. It also hosts the Centre for African Studies and Centre for Eurasian Studies besides several museums, research labs, and the office of the Controller of Examinations known as Examination House.


The campus at Thane, established in 2014, is the newest.

Several post-graduate facilities are off-campus, including Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies and VeermataJijabai Technological Institute, the oldest engineering college in Asia.

With more than 700 affiliated colleges and over 560,000 students, it is one of the world’s largest universities.

Mumbai University Courses 

UG Courses
The University offers undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, Law,  Science, Engineering, and Fine Arts.
There are four-year B.E courses in various branches of engineering, including civil, mechanical, automobile, chemical, and electronics. There is also scope for studying four-year B.Pharm and five-year B.Arch degrees.

Admission is based on entrance examinations as per rules of that department and college.

PG Courses
Mumbai University offers two year full-time courses in Arts, Science, Commerce. Admission is based on academic performance at graduation level.
Besides it also offers two years full-time M.E and M.Tech courses.

Management Courses
The University of Mumbai offers an MBA in Finance, Marketing, Human Resources, Information Management through Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. The university also offers its own three-year part-time and two year full-time courses in management studies.

Ranking
The Mumbai University is ranked 801–1000 in QS World University Rankings of 2018. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranks it at 151-200.

Institute of Distance & Open Learning (IDOL)
Mumbai University’s, The Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) offer UG and PG courses in Arts, Commerce, Science, and Management. The entrance is based on merit for all the courses except MCA, which requires an entrance exam.

Admission Dates
The admission to UG courses commences in late May or early June after 12th standard results and continues till late June. There are three merit lists published between mid-June and the end of June.

Admission to PG courses begin in the third week of July and continue for a month.
