Dance of Democracy: India Votes in Biggest Round

India today votes in the  biggest phase of Lok Sabha polls. Voting began at 0700 hrs  to elect representatives from 117 Lok Sabha constituencies across 13 states and two Union Territories in the third of the seven-phase 2019 General Election. More than 18 crore, 85 lakh voters are going to decide the fate of 1,640 candidates in over 210,000 polling booths.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi voted in Gujarat's Ahmedabad this morning. Prominent candidates in the fray on Tuesday in the third phase include the presidents of the two main political parties, BJP chief Amit Shah making his Lok Sabha election debut from Gandhinagar in Gujarat and Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who is contesting from Wayanad, his second constituency apart from Amethi, Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav seeking re-election from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, Supriya Sule, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate from Baramati in Maharashtra and former Congress minister Shashi Tharoor from the Thiruvananthapuram constituency in Kerala.

One killed during poll violence in West Bengal's Murshidabad

Poll related clashes led to the death of a voter Piarul Abul Kalam during West Bengal's third phase polling in Murshidabad today.


Primary report said, Piarul Abul Kalam was standing in the queue at Ranitala Baligram booth to cast his ballot when the rival supporters of TMC and Congress activists involved in fighting with bamboo, clubs and other weapons near Bhagobangola.

Congress leader Abu Hena claimed the victim was their party supporter.

 

Ex-Indian PM Manmohan Singh casts his vote

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and his wife cast their votes in Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency in the third and final phase polling in Assam today.

Dr Singh and Gurcharan Kaur exercised their franchise at the Dispur Government Higher Secondary School in Super Market area of Guwahati in the afternoon.

The couple had flown in from New Delhi to especially participate in the polling process and is scheduled to return in the evening after a stopover at their rented accommodation in the city, which Dr Singh lists as his permanent address.

Voting taking place peacefully in Bihar, 33.78% polling till 1 pm

Barring few stray incidents, the polling was underway in five constituencies of Bihar during the third phase of Lok Sabha election peacefully even as at least 33.78 per cent voters exercised their franchise till 1 pm on Tuesday.

Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav cast vote in Saifai

Brisk polling in Assam

Brisk polling has been reported in the first two hours of voting in four Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam in the third and final phase of an election. Average 12.36 per cent voter turnout has been reported till 0900 hours, official sources said here. Dhubri has recorded 14.52 per cent polling, Guwahati 12.38per cent, Barpeta 11.71per cent and Kokrajhar 10.14per cent. Polling has been progressing smoothly, though reports of problems in EVMs have been reported from some parts. 

Goa CM, Governor cast votes

Peaceful polling begins in Odisha

Polling began on a peaceful note in the third phase for six Lok Sabha and 42 Assembly seats in Odisha amid tight security. As many as 92,56,922 voters will decide the electoral fortune of 417 candidates,61 of them for 6 Lok Sabha and 356 for 42 Assembly seats over 10,464 booths,3186 of which have been identified as critical booths. A five-tier security arrangement has been made to conduct the polls in a free and fair manner in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

PM Modi votes in Ahmedabad

Accompanied by BJP chief Amit Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday cast his vote in Ahmedabad as the third phase of polling in the Lok Sabha elections is currently underway. After casting his vote, PM Modi told reporters: "The weapon of terrorism is IED, the strength of democracy is voter ID. I believe that the strength of voter ID card is more than IED."
