LIVE: PM Modi repeals three farm laws

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the repeal of three controversial farm laws that had triggered massive protests by the peasants. The new laws, which was controversially enacted amid COVID-19 pandemic, would have facilitated the farmers to sell their produce beyond the regulated wholesale market. However, farmers mostly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, who camped in and around Delhi for almost a year as a protest, fear they would be left at the mercy of the private players once the laws are enforced.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday night hailed the Modi government's decision to cancel the three controversial farm laws, calling it the victory of the struggle and willpower of 62 crore farmers.

The "anti-farming laws have lost and the annadata (farmer) has emerged victorious", she said, calling them "anti-farmer, anti-labourer conspiracy... (and) arrogance of dictatorial rulers".

Gandhi highlighted the importance of the MSP system for the farmers and said they will continue to protest even after the three laws are repealed.

No alliance with BJP in Punjab: Shiromani Akali Dal chief after farm laws cancelled

Even as the Centre repealed the farm laws, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP's) former ally from Punjab - the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-has denied possibility of any further alliance.

Last year, the Akali Dal had pulled out its lone minister - Harsimrat Kaur Badal - from the ruling NDA amid differences over the farm laws.

On Friday, party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal dismissed the possibility of a tie-up in Punjab.

Will wait till farm laws repealed in Parliament: Rakesh Tikait

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president Rakesh Tikait has said the protests will be called off only after the farm laws are repealed in Parliament. 

He tweeted, "The agitation will not be withdrawn immediately, we will wait for the day when agricultural laws will be repealed in Parliament. Along with MSP, the government should also discuss other issues of farmers."

"We will finish the process to repeal the law in the upcoming Parliament session."
