At least 40 people were killed and many injured at two Christchurch mosques in shootings by gunmen who stormed inside the premises in the worst terror attack in New Zealand . The shootings occurred at two mosques - one at Deans Avenue and the other at Linwood Avenue - in Christchurch. With the death toll in mosque shootings in New Zealand's Christchurch rising to about 40, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern held a press conference about the carnage in the country's east coast city of Christchurch and termed the incident one of New Zealand's darkest days. "It is clear that this is one of New Zealand's darkest days. What has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence," Ardern told reporters. "For now my thoughts and I'm sure the thoughts of all New Zealanders are with those who have been affected and also with the families," Ardern added.

Former Pakistani skipper Shahid Afridi, who has played several cricket matches in the city in his career, described the attack in Christchurch mosques as 'horryfying'.

"Horrifying tragedy #Christchurch. I found NZ one of safest, most peaceful places, people are friendly. Spoke to Tamim big relief B'desh squad/staff is safe. World must together! stop hatred!Terrorism has no religion! Prayers for bereaved families. May Allah bless the departed," he tweeted.

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has condmned the the attacks in Christchurch mosques which left ovrer 40 people killed.

Kohli described the incident as 'cowardly'.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent his condolences to New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern over the deadly terrorist attacks on mosques in Christchurch, the Kremlin said Friday.

"Cruelty and cynicism of the attacks on peaceful citizens who gathered for a prayer shock us. I hope that everyone involved in this crime will receive a well-deserved punishment," Putin said in a telegram.

Bangladesh cricket team escaped the shootings narrowly

The Bangladesh cricket team touring New Zealand escaped the shootings miraculously as they were about to enter the mosque, when the incident occurred. The  players "got inside a bus and laid down on the floor after the warning," said a Bangladesh reporter.

Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim said they were saved by god and were extremely lucky.

New Zeland Herald quoted the Prime Minister saying, "It is clear that this can only be described as a terrorist attack. From what we know, it does appear to have been well planned. Two explosive devices attached to suspects' vehicles have been found and they have been disarmed."

Those in custody had not been on any terrorism watch list: "It's not a matter of someone having slipped under the radar," Ardern said.

"There are currently four individuals who have been apprehended but three are connected to this attack and are currently in custody, one of which has publicly stated that they were Australian born.

"These are people who I would describe as having extremist views that have absolutely no place in New Zealand and in fact have no place in the world," she said, according to NZ Herald. 

 

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said 10 people were killed at Linwood Avenue Mosque and 30 at the Deans Ave mosque near Hagley Park. She said a further 20 people were seriously injured, while Christchurch Hospital has just confirmed 48 people suffered gunshot, wounds, reports NZ Herald.
