SFJ leaders confirmed that the summons was delivered to Gandhi when she was at the Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York for a medical check-up. A US federal court issued summons against Gandhi for allegedly protecting party leaders who were accused of being involved in the anti-Sikhriots that rocked India in 1984. SFJ, along with victims of the riots, filed the class action suit against Gandhi. They sought compensatory and punitive damages against Gandhi, reports said. The riots erupted in Delhi and elsewhere following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.
