2 dead, 3 injured as Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derails near UP's Gonda station

Gonda (UP): At least two people were killed and three injured as a few bogies of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed near Uttar Pradesh's Gonda railway station on Thursday, media reported.

Several coaches of the train derailed near Pikaura, between Gonda and Jhilahi in Uttar Pradesh.

The train, which departed from Chandigarh station at 11:35 PM on Wednesday, was headed for Dibrugarh in Assam, India Today reported.


Initial reports indicated that some passengers were injured. Visuals show people standing beside the tracks with their luggage.

A rescue team has been dispatched to the scene. Reacting to the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his sorrow over the accident. He directed officials to promptly reach the site and expedite the relief efforts.

"Assam CM  Himanta Biswa Sarma has been briefed about the derailment of the Dibrugarh - Chandigarh express in Uttar Pradesh. He is monitoring the situation and the Government of Assam is in touch with relevant authorities, " announced the chief minister's office.

Instructions have also been given to the State Disaster Response Force team to reach the spot and speed up the relief work.
