2012 Delhi gangrape-murder case: Supreme Court to decide fate of three convicts
New Delhi, July 9 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Monday will pronounce its verdict on the review petitions filed by three convicts in the Delhi gangrape case of 2012.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan is expected to deliver its judgment on the petition filed by the three convicts.
Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma have filed the pleas in the apex court.
A review petition against the apex court’s May 5, 2017 order has not been filed by the fourth convict in the case Akshay Kumar Singh.
In its 2017 verdict, the Supreme Court had upheld the capital punishment awarded to the convicts by the Delhi High Court and the trial court.
On Dec 16, 2012, six people gangraped and brutalised the 23-year-old Delhi Braveheart or Nirbhaya with an iron rod on a moving bus in New Delhi.
The victim succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital on Dec 29.
The incident triggered nationwide outrage against rising cases of crime against women in India with people pouring into the streets of New Delhi for days and demanding a change of law and strict punishment of the accused.
