8 women die, 15 serious after sterilization surgery in Bilaspur

Bilaspur, Nov 11 (IBNS): At least eight women died and over 15 others are in critical state after sterilization surgery at a camp organized by the Chhattisgarh government in Bilaspur, media reports said.

These women underwent surgery on Saturday as part of an annual “family planning” camp. These camps are held between October and February every year and women who go through the surgery are given Rs. 1,400.

Sources said these women started complaining of pain and fever on Monday. By evening, eight of them were dead.

Reports said as many as 83 women were operated upon in five hours at the camp held in the Takhatpur area of Bilaspur, about 110-km far from state capital Raipur.

A three-member panel has been set up by the government to investigate the matter.

The government also announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased women and Rs. 50,000 for others who are now undergoing treatment.
