9Minute9PM blackout: Chinese Ambassador to India lights diya to show solidarity with people in fight against COVID-19

Beijing/IBNS: Joining the 1.2 million people in India in their fight against COVId-19, the Chinese Ambassador to the country Sun Weidong on Sunday participated in Indian PM Narendra Modi's call for unity by lighting a diya (lamp) here.

The Chinese envoy said he showed his solidarity with Indians in their fight against the infectious virus that has now spread across the globe.

"Light a Diya to stand in solidarity with people of #India in the fight against #COVID19. Pay tribute to all medical workers. At this difficult time, #Chinese & Indian people are standing together through thick & thin. Wish India an early victory against the epidemic. #9pm9minute," the envoy tweeted.

China is believed to be the nation where the disease spread.

Responding to the call of  PM Narendra Modi during his Friday morning video address to the nation, people across India on Sunday lighted candles and diyas and switched off the lights for nine minutes at 9 pm to show their unity in the fight against COVID-19.

People could be seen standing on their balconies and verandas with candles, lanterns and diyas (earthen lamps) to show their unity in the fight against the disease.
While some opposition parties like the Congress and many of Modi critics had ridiculed the call of the Prime Minister, people by and large responded spontaneously and many burst firecrackers to pay their tribute to those in the front lines of fight against Covid-19.

The initiative is being held at a time when the nation is under 21-day lockdown to combat the infectious disease.
