Shillong/UNI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Meghalaya’s state capital Shillong was cancelled due to bad weather and addressed an election rally briefly over the phone on Tuesday evening.

“With a lot of sorrow I want to tell the voters that due to bad weather, neither my flight nor helicopter could land in Shillong today. That’s why I am addressing you through the mobile phone,” Shah said through his phone which played across the mike at an election rally in Gorkha Patshala football ground, Upper Mawprem in the city.

“This time the Bharatiya Janata Party has set up its candidates to contest for all the sixty assembly seats in Meghalaya. Our aim is to make Meghalaya free of corruption and end the menace from the state,” he said.

“We want to end ‘vansh-vaad’ (dynastic rule) and develop Meghalaya under the leadership of Modi ji,” Shah said over the phone, even as he urged the electorate to ensure huge victory for the BJP candidates.

Ex-police officer and aspiring candidate from the BJP M Kharkrang was also present on the dias along with BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra and Union minister John Barla.

“I will try to come before the elections, but if I am unable to come then I will certainly come to take part in the victory rallies of our candidates, I promise you,” Shah said from Guwahati, from where he could not proceed to Shillong due to poor aero visibility.

“Modi-ji has done a lot for the development of Meghalaya but we need a good government which will not leave the projects incomplete or sacrifice the projects due to corruption, but ensure that the money given by Modi-ji directly reaches the people,” Shah said.

“For this, you need your own government, meaning Bharatiya Janata Party government in Meghalaya is immensely required,” he said.

“Bharatiya Janata Party government will provide security to all individuals. After a BJP government is formed there is no need for anyone to be scared in Shillong.

"We want to provide security to all persons and we can do so and it has happened in many states, including neighbouring Assam,” the Union home minister said in his election address.

“In Assam, there has been a lot of development after the formation of BJP government and we want to develop Meghalaya in the lines of the ‘Assam model’," Shah said and iterated his appeal to the electorate to vote for BJP and “strengthen the hands” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
