New Delhi/UNI/IBNS: Protesters against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi's Seelampur turned violent and clashed with the police leaving around 21 injured, police sources said here.

According to police, the situation is now under control in the area, but, the police is maintaining vigil.

Among the injured, fifteen are policemen, the sources said.

Police have said that there was no lathi-charge or firing at all. However, they had to use tear gas shells to control the violent protesters.

Delhi Police PRO Mandeep Singh Randhawa said: "The situation in the area is being strictly monitored and those found indulging in violence will not be spared.
Police also appealed to the people not to believe in rumours and maintain peace."

The fresh violence occurred just days after Delhi witnessed clashes between Jamia Millia Islamia University students and the police during an agitation against the law on Sunday.

More than 1,000 people gathered outside the DCP office in North-East Delhi's Seelampur protesting against the CAA, with the police resorting to lathi-charge and tear gas, reported UNI.

The protesters were shouting slogans -- 'Hindu-Muslim Zindabad' and 'Jamia tum sangharsh karo, hum tumhare saath hain'.

They reportedly damaged buses and several other vehicles in the area.

The national capital is witnessing a row of protests with Indian Youth Congress carrying out a torch rally against the incidents at Jamia Millia Islamia on Tuesday wherein senior Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat took part.

The opposition leaders on Tuesday evening led by the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi met President Ram Nath Kovind over the Jamia Millia Islamia incident.

Around ten people have been arrested so far by the Delhi Police in connection with the Jamia incident out of which three had criminal backgrounds, while none of them was a student.

As per sources, the protest in Jaffrabad in North East Delhi was supposed to be held at around 1400 hours and people came together and walked towards Seelampur where their protest turned violent.
