Army major killed in encounter with militants in Manipur

Imphal, Apr 14 (IBNS) A major of the Indian army's elite special forces was killed in an encounter with militants in Manipur on Wednesday, reports said.

Major Amit Deswal of 21 Para Special Forces was killed during a gun battle with Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) in the Nungba area Tamenglong district.

Army officials said one militant was also killed in the encounter.

The security forces have called off the combing operation in Tamenglong district and are trying to bring back the officer’s body from the remote area.

Reports quoted army officials as saying that the area is is densely forested and they have not been able to bring the body of major Amit Deswal, who hailed from Haryana.
