Arvind Kejriwal demands army deployment at Covid centre, Amit Shah assures 'work in full swing'

New Delhi/IBNS: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has asked the Centre to deploy doctors and health staff from the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at the upcoming 10,000-bed coronavirus facility in the national capital.

He has also requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to inspect the facility, touted as the world' largest COVID-19 treatment centre.

In response to Kejriwal's request, Shah responded that the work is progressing in full swing and that the facility will start functioning by June 26.

"Dear Kejriwal Ji, it has already been decided in our meeting 3 days back and the MHA has assigned the work of operating the 10,000-bed COVID Care Centre at Radha Swami Beas in Delhi to ITBP. The work is in full swing and a large part of the facility will be operational by 26th June," he tweeted.

This comes as the Delhi government was combatting a shortage of beds for treatment of infected patients with the spike in the number of cases in the national capital.

The Radha Soami Spiritual Centre, used for sheltering migrant workers until rcently, is being converted into a massive COVID-19 facility.

The centre has a covered area of 12,50,000 square feet and will have nearly 200 enclosures with 50 beds each.

The Union Home Minister, in a series of tweets, assured the people of Delhi that there will be no shortage of beds for treatment of the virus-infected patients in the coming days.

Amit Shah and Kejriwal held a meeting on Sunday to review the coronavirus situation in the national capital.

It was decided in the meeting to conduct more "robust" contact tracing, revamp the entire containment zone strategy and strengthen medical services in areas most affected by the virus.

Delhi has surpassed Tamil Nadu to become the second-worst coronavirus-hit state in the country.

On Monday, it recorded 2,909 fresh cases, taking the tally in the city over the 62,000-mark.
