Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said prudent policing is the backbone of good governance which also plays the role of a catalyst in propelling development.

Addressing a daylong conference of the Superintendents of Police of the state in Kaziranga on Wednesday Himanta Biswa Sarma urged upon the SPs to be more prudent to enable policing to get into the root of any crime to facilitate expeditious delivery of justice.

During the daylong deliberations, the Assam Chief Minister while reviewing the law and order prevailing in the state also took stock of the internal security issues which have greater ramifications on the peace and prosperity of the state including a skilled and professional intelligence gathering system.

Dr. Sarma during the conference also harped on the importance of robust strategies for stopping the commission of crimes and performing well researched, exhaustive and intelligent investigations.

During the conference, ways and means were also discussed for police modernisation and giving new momentum to policing. It was also decided to raise professional commando battalions of 10 numbers to be placed at various critical places. The new commandos will be trained in line with NSG commandos.

Moreover for reducing the work load on police forces, two shifts of duty will be introduced in all police stations across the state. The conference also discussed welfare of police forces including construction of quarters for them.

Moreover, one month special leave will be given to the police personnel posted at different battalions to enable them to live with their families. A Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) will be prepared soon to implement it. A free compulsory health check up facility will be introduced for the police personnel once in a year.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said that to enable the SPs and DCs to sort different issues of administrative importance two separate conferences will be held every year in the state.  The first DCs conference will be held in August in Diphu this year.

Moreover seven forensic science laboratories will be set up in the state. The conference also decided to adopt zero tolerance towards cow smuggling and drug smuggling. All SPs have been asked not to allow their districts to be used as transit routes.

Talking about inter-state boundary issue, Sarma said that Assam will protect its boundaries at all cost.  However it will also live in the spirit of seven sisters to promote balanced development.

P&RD Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, Health Minister Keshav Mahanta, DGP Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Samir Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary of Home Department Neeraj Verma and other senior police officers were present during the conference.
