Guwahati, Oct 1 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday said that Assam Police has been providing exemplary service to the people of the state and their uniform carries a lot of power and responsibility.

“However, the oath they took while wearing the uniform must be upheld in all circumstances and Assam Police personnel must stay away from all such acts which might tarnish their reputation and stain their uniforms,” Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said while speaking as the chief guest at the Assam Police Day 2019 programme held at 4th APBN ground, Kahilipara in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Urging the police personnel to stay steadfast in the face of temptations and inducements, Sonowal said that many police officials in the state had made tremendous sacrifices in the line of duty and their examples must be followed to provide dedicated and selfless public service.

The Assam Chief Minister also said that 3.33 crore people of the state always expect the 70,000 police personnel to be their saviour and protector and Assam police must live up to those expectations without fail. Dedication and sincerity of the personnel must translate into performance and conscience must guide all their actions, the chief minister asserted.

While honouring 19 police officials for their outstanding performances with Chief Minister's Medal, Sonowal said that Assam Police should aim for becoming the best police force in the country. He urged them to set an example before the younger generation and win the trust of the public through dedicated service.

Saying that newer challenges were emerging everyday posing threats to peace and harmony in the society, Sonowal stated that Assam Police along with civil society must work together to fight prevalent menaces like drugs, crimes, superstitions etc to eliminate them completely.

“Only good deeds live forever and there is no place for corrupt practices in the society. Assam Police personnel must always choose the right way in delivering their services and only then their joining the force would be justified,” Sonowal said.

Urging the Director General of Assam Police to ensure clean and green environment in all the police battalion campuses in the state, the Assam CM emphasised on the need to plant trees in all the police station campuses and maintain a clean environment.

Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia also spoke on the occasion where he highlighted the crucial role played by Assam Police in the fight against insurgency and maintaining law and order situation during the NRC updation process.

He also shed light on the infrastructure development of police stations in the state under the MOITRI scheme.

Media Adviser to the Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, Additional Chief Secretary of Home Department Kumar Sanjay Krishna, MLAs Bimal Bora and Rituparna Barua were also present at the programme along with top police officials of the state.
