Assam: Customs recover 94 pieces of fake Rs 2000 notes near Guwahati

Guwahati, June 11 (IBNS) : Assam has turned out to be major hub of fake currency since demonetization as security agencies recovered huge quantity of fake Indian currency from different parts of the state.

On Sunday, the Customs department recovered fake Indian currency notes with a value of Rs 1,88,000 from Changsari area, outskirts of Guwahati and arrested a person in connection with it.

According to the reports, following a tip-off, sleuths of Customs department launched operation at Changsari area and arrested a person named Mohammad Riyaj Ali and recovered fake Rs 2000 notes with a value of Rs 6000 in possession from him.

Following the arrest, the Customs team had recovered another bundle of fake notes, which was thrown from a vehicle chased by the team.

A top official of Customs department said the vehicle had managed to flee from the area after throwing the fake notes bundle.

The Customs departments recovered 94 pieces of fake Rs 2000 notes during the operation.

Recently, the Customs officials had recovered fake notes worth of Rs 6 lakh in Guwahati.

The top official said the fake Indian currency notes have been flooded to the state from Bangladesh.

According to the Union home ministry, the Border Security Force (BSF) at the Indo-Bangladesh border seized 378 fake notes of Rs 2000 in West Bengal and Assam with a value of Rs 7.56 lakh post demonetisation up to April last.

Apart from the BSF, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had seized 22,677 fake notes of Rs 2000 from different parts of the country.
