Assam flood death toll rises to 62
Guwahati, July 20 (IBNS): The death toll in monsoon flooding in Assam has moved up to touch 62 as still over 4.4 million people and animals continue to face hardships in the state.
The flood water in several flood affected areas in the state has receded, but still over 44 lakh people of 24 districts in the state are under water.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 12 persons have died due to flood in the state in past 24 hours and the death toll mounted to 62.
12 persons have died in Morigaon, Nalbari Barpeta, Dhubri and South Salmara district in past 24 hours.
According to the reports, five persons drowned in flood waters in Morigaon district while three each in Barpeta, two in South Salmara and one each in Nalbari and Dhubri districts.
3024 villages and 1,51,380 hectare of crop lands are still under water.
The administration has set up 689 relief camps and 240 Relief Distribution Centres in the flood-hit districts and 1,31,586 flood affected people have taken shelter in the relief camps.
On the other hand, the water level of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are receding but still flowing above danger level marks in many places in the state.
