Guwahati/IBNS: Amid rising the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, the Assam government has issued a new SOP for Republic Day celebrations in the state.

According to the new SOP issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) signed by Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua, Republic Day programme will be limited to National Flag hoisting, speech by the guest of honour and ceremonial parade only.

"Other activities like cultural programmes, award/prize distribution are to be avoided. The additional instructions have been issued for containment of COVID-19 in the state with specific reference to forthcoming Republic Day celebrations," said in the SOP.

The government SOP stated that the gathering for the Republic Day programme may be limited to a maximum of 1,000 for state level function in Kamrup (Metro) district, 500 for district level function and 200 for any other level.

"There will be no involvement of school children in the ceremonial parade or march past. Only trained police, security personnel and Homeguards who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to participate in the ceremonial parade and march past. Pre and post Republic Day programmes may be avoided in view of the prevailing COVID situation in the state,” said in the SOP.

Assam on Friday reported 6,897 new COVID-19 positive cases with 12.13% positivity rate.
