Assam veterinary scam: CBI court convicts four retired govt officials, five others in connection with 26 years old case
Guwahati/IBNS: The special court of CBI in Guwahati on Thursday convicted four retired government officials including retired Deputy Secretary and Director of the Assam veterinary department and five other persons and sentenced to three years imprisonment in connection with a 26 years old crore of rupees scam case.
According to the reports, the CBI had registered this case on May 17, 1994, under section 120B, 420, 467, 471, 477A, 201 of IPC and under section 13(2) r/w 13(1) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act 1988 against several people in connection with misappropriation of an amount of Rs 1,21,35,879.13 (approximately) on false Letter of Credits (LOCs), sanction orders and bills pertaining to purchase of veterinary medicines.
The Special Judge, CBI Cases, Guwahati on Thursday sentenced Jiauddin Ahmed, then Dy. Secretary, Veterinary Secretariat Assam; Jugal Chandra Saikia, then Director, Veterinary Directorate, Guwahati; Harekrishna Das, then Store Keeper, ICDP, Howli, Veterinary Directorate and M.Rahman, then Accountant, ICDP, Howli, Veterinary Directorate, all to undergo three years simple imprisonment with fine of Rs 50,000.
It was alleged that certain officials working in the office of district veterinary, Barpeta and Howli, entered into a criminal conspiracy with the suppliers for cheating the Assam government through its veterinary department and in furtherance of the said criminal conspiracy they misappropriated an amount of Rs 1,21,35,879.13 on false LOCs, sanction orders and bills pertaining to purchase of veterinary medicines.
After investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet on February 13, 1997 against the accused.
The trial court found the accused guilty and convicted them.
