Assembly Elections 2017: Polling continues in Punjab and Goa without any major news of disruption

Amritsar, Feb 4 (IBNS): Polling is underway peacefully in all parts of Punjab on Saturday, according to media reports, with 35 to 40% voters casting their vote till 1 PM.

The multi-state 2017 Assembly Elections began with Punjab and Goa going to the polls on Saturday.

The single-phase elections in the two states will see a three-way battle between the BJP, Congress and a debutante Aam Aadmi Party.

According to an NDTV report, Punjab will witness intense competition in Lambi - where incumbent Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal faces his predecessor Amarinder Singh - and the Jalalabad seat, where AAP MP Bhagwant Mann fights Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Former BJP MP and newly-inducted Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu contests from Amritsar East whereas Amarinder Singh  faces former Army chief General JJ Singh in Patiala.

Polling in some constituencies in Punjab paused due to faulty EVM machines, said sources to NDTV.

Meanwhile, Goa recorded 15 per cent voting in the first two hours since the start of polling at 7am on Saturday.

Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was among the first to cast his vote in Goa, according to media reports.

Tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, "Urging people of Punjab & Goa to turnout in record numbers & vote in the Assembly elections. I particularly urge my young friends to vote."
