Kolkata/IBNS: Howrah City Police have arrested 10 people so far in connection with an attack on policemen on Covid-19 duty in Howrah's containment zone Tikiapara area earlier on Tuesday, while further raids are on at the location, officials said on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior officials of Howrah City Police said that total three suo-moto FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident under IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 189 (Threat of injury to public servant), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 379 (Theft), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Besides these IPC sections, police have also pressed charges under Disaster Management Act 2005 sections 51 (Obstruction) and 52 (False claim), section 9 of West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act 1972, and Prevention of Damage of Public Property Act 1984 section 3 (Mischief causing damage to public property) and 4 (Mischief causing damage to public property by fire or explosive substance).

"We have arrested 10 people so far in connection with the case and our further probe as well as raids are on to identify and nab all perpetrators involved in the attack on police," a senior official told IBNS.

"Our personnel along with Rapid Action Force (RAF) are currently patrolling at the area," the official added.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, lockdown violators at a large number chased and attacked policemen at containment zone Belilious Road area near Tikiapara police outpost, when cops went there to disperse the mob who had reportedly gathered at the region, defying lockdown restrictions, social distancing norms and other precautionary measures.

At least two cops were injured in the attack while a police jeep was vandalized by the mob.

Following the incident, West Bengal Police tweeted: "We are taking strong action against everyone involved in the incident at Tikiapara, Howrah today. The perpetrators will be identified & brought to justice. No transgression of the law anywhere will be tolerated."
