'Be Careful, Mahua!': Moitra's fresh poetic dig at her critics on Kali controversy

New Delhi/IBNS: Facing several FIRs over her remark on Goddess Kali in reference to a film's controversial poster, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra took on her critics Thursday through a poem credited to "A Citizen of India".

The seven-stanza poem "Be Careful, Mahua!" takes on those who "assault our freedom".

In her post, she criticizes those who are "too scared to speak against the march of hate".

"Be careful, they said to her, You'll end up getting jailed! Thank you for your concern, she said. But I think that ship has sailed," the poem says.

"Don't tell her to 'be careful', stand with her instead, shine a light and speak some truth into that pit of dread" reads the last few lines that could apply to her party, which had distanced itself from her remark and rather condemned her comments.

What is the controversy?

Speaking at the India Today Conclave East 2022, Moitra, who is an MP from West Bengal's Krishnanagar, said Tuesday, "Kaali to me, is a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess. You have the freedom to imagine your goddess.

"There are some places where whiskey is offered to gods and in some other places it would be blasphemy."

The poster of a documentary titled Kaali is creating quite a stir online for showing the Hindu goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette.

It all started after the director, Leena Manimekalai, shared the poster of the film on Twitter.

TMC reaction:

Soon after she made the remark, the TMC distanced itself from the comments.

"The comments made by @MahuaMoitra at the #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are NOT ENDORSED BY THE PARTY in ANY MANNER OR FORM. All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments," the party tweeted.

Moitra too unfollowed her party Wednesday though she continues to follow TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.
