Bengal Guv CV Ananda Bose in violence-hit Sandeshkhali; 6 BJP MLAs suspended in assembly over protest

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose reached West Bengal's Sandeshkhali, where local women resorted to violent protests against absconding Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh last week, media reports said.

Bose's convoy was stopped midway by TMC supporters.

Meanwhile, six Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs including Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari were suspended by the Speaker in the state assembly for the remainder of the session after they protested sitting on the floor wearing t-shirts carrying slogans.

"Even if we are jailed, BJP will raise its voice against those who disrespect women," said Adhikari.

Following their suspension, Suvendu and other BJP MLAs boarded a bus to visit Sandeshkhali.

The administration has imposed Section 144 in Sandeshkhali to ban large gatherings in the area.

On Friday, a huge group of women with sticks and brooms in their hands held protest rallies in various parts of Sandeshkhali demanding Shahjahan's arrest.

They even clashed with police, turning the situation intense.

Shahjahan's aide Shiboprosad Hazra's house was vandalised, his furniture was set ablaze and his poultry farm in Zelia Khali was also set on fire, reports said.

Police arrested eight people in connection with the vandalisation.

The protesting women have alleged Shahjahan and his aides captured several lands forcefully and sexually harassed them.

"We may have remained hungry but at least we had peace about ten years ago. Now we have no peace in the locality," says a protesting woman speaking to a local news channel.

When the Enforcement Directorate officials reached Shahjahan's house to quiz him in connection with the ration scam, they were attacked, beaten up and forced to flee abandoning their raids by a section of activists from the ruling party.
