Guwahati, Jan 24 (IBNS): While the massive protests are continuing in Assam against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday said his government is committed to protect the interest of the people of the state.

While attending a programme organised by the Assam state BJP at Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati to felicitate the newly elected panchayat members of the party, the Assam CM said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given us a golden opportunity by taking a strong decision in the Union cabinet as the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord will be implemented in letter and spirit to provide the constitutional safeguard to the people of Assam.

“We are committed to implement it with letter and spirit. PM Modi has taken a bold decision to give the ST status to six communities, which have been pending for quite sometimes. It is a long standing demand and the government has taken the decision as without affecting the right and privilege of the existing tribal communities in the state. So these are the strongest constitutional safeguard for the people of Assam. So the people of Assam have nothing to worry. This government is formed only to protect the interests of the people,” Sonowal said.

Over 20,000 party workers, newly elected panchayat members took part in the programme.

Apart from Sonowal, Assam Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, state BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass, party leader Mahendra Singh were also present in the function.

In his speech, Sarma said that Congress will be finished in Assam in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Himanta said that BJP is the future of Assam and the party will decide the future of the state in next 20 years.

The Assam minister also criticised the protesters, who protested against the Citizenship bill.

Despite the ongoing protest against the bill, the BJP had won over 42 percent seats in the recently held panchayat elections in the state.
