BJP tries to milk UN's Masood Azhar ban in election season
New Delhi, May 1 (UNI): The BJP on Wednesday sounded triumphant after United Nations Security Council (UNSC) placed Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar in its sanctions list with senior leaders and union ministers hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy.
Senior Minister Arun Jaitley said the move by the world body "marks a high point for the Prime Minister’s foreign policy".
"India stands vindicated. Masood Azar is now a global terrorist. India is in safe hands," he tweeted.
The saffron party's official Twitter handle in no time gave the credit to Prime Minister and posted a missive: "Modi hai toh mumkin hai (It's possible only with Modi)" - a ready reference to one of its campaign line during the ongoing elections.
"India has attained a historic success against terrorist. UN Security Council's Pulwama terror attack convict Masood Azhar declared as an international terror. It's possible because of Modi," the missive said in Hindi.
Union law minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad also took to the micro blogging site and said - "Efforts made under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi has resulted into UNSC declaring Masood Azhar a terrorist under its sanction list. A great victory for India in our fight against terrorism".
In his missive, another Union minister Prakash Javadekar said: "Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Masood Azhar declared as global terrorist by UNSC. A big diplomatic victory for India under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi in the fight against terrorism. Now Pakistan stands completely exposed."
"The Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities approved the addition of [Masood Azhar] to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List," the UN committee said.
