BJP's attack on me proves their defeat in UP: Mamata in Modi's constituency Varanasi

Varanasi/IBNS: Supporting Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers' alleged attack on her here a day ago shows the saffron brigade is losing the ongoing assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Banerjee, who leads the Trinamool Congress (TMC), shared the dais with Yadav supporting the SP-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi.

"Yesterday, some workers of the BJP asked me to return when I was coming to a meeting. I am not a coward but a fighter...

"When these people (BJP workers) were using abusive language against me, I got down from my car, waited for a while and then thanked them because their action shows BJP has lost the elections," said Banerjee, who had decimated the BJP in the 2021 West Bengal elections in Mar-Apr last year.

This is Banerjee's second visit to the state in support of the SP-RLD alliance, a year after Yadav backed the TMC in the West Bengal polls.

The sixth phase of polls in Uttar Pradesh is underway on Thursday.

The seventh and final phase will be held on Mar 7 and the result will be declared on 10th of the same month.
